Do you remember the first day of school?
For some of us, it was the exciting finale to weeks of buying new supplies and a special first-day outfit, lovingly chosen by you and Mom.
For others, it wasn’t that way. A friend who grew up in poverty told me she never showed up until the second day of school, when her shabby clothes wouldn’t be the focus of attention.
I’m writing to ask you to help Foothill Unity Center give local kids like her a more level playing field by providing the back to school items their families can’t afford.
On August 6, some 1,500 local children from kindergarten through college will pour into Santa Anita Park for our annual Back to School Event. We’ll turn the huge concourse into what one of our dazzled young participants called “a whole mall for kids!” –filled with new clothing, backpacks, shoe vouchers, school supplies, books, free haircuts and more.
At the end of the day, we’ll send them back to class with the best gift of all: a true enthusiasm for school.
