WESTFIELD PARTNERS WITH I:CO TO
LAUNCH “REFASHION THE FUTURE” APPAREL
The initiative will help consumers clean out their wardrobes, reduce waste, preserve natural resources and protect the environment.
Los Angeles, CA (April 18, 2017)— Coinciding with Earth Day on April 22, 2017, Westfield will launch REFASHION THE FUTURE, a recycling program designed to minimize textile waste by rewarding consumers for turning in their old or unwanted clothing and shoes. Every year, billions of pounds of consumers’ clothing and shoes end up in landfills, wasting valuable material and natural resources while also contributing to significant environmental degradation. Most of these discarded items are actually reusable or recyclable, but only if they are proactively collected. Accordingly, Westfield is partnering with I:Collect (I:CO®), a leading global provider for the reuse and recycling of apparel, footwear and other textiles, to provide consumers a simple, convenient and meaningful solution to promote product end-of-life responsibility. The REFASHION THE FUTURE initiative enables millions of shoppers to bring their used clothing and shoes (any brand in clean, dry condition) to all participating Westfield shopping centers located across the United States, including in markets such as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, San Diego and Washington DC.
“We are always looking at how we can make a positive contribution that both inspires change and empowers our customers,” said William Hecht, Westfield’s Chief Operating Officer in the United States. “Our REFASHION THE FUTURE program helps our shoppers clean out and refresh their wardrobes, and in the process, give back to the community and help protect our environment.” Upon turning in their unwanted items to concierge desks, Westfield customers will be entitled to receive a Program Rewards Card, which provides shopping deals and promotions at a number of participating retailers (listed below). “By partnering with the world class shopping center operator Westfield and its participating retailers, I:CO is ensuring an exceptional service allowing millions of guests easy access to clothing and shoes recycling,” said Kenneth Cheah, I:CO’s Chief Executive Officer in the United States. “We are excited about our first collaboration with a premier shopping center and the positive impact we will have on the communities and the planet.”
I:CO will collect and sort the items to find their next best use, thereby extending their lifespan and saving resources at the same time. For example, items deemed to still be wearable find new homes as second-hand goods. Unwearable items are processed to become secondary materials for new products such as cleaning cloth,
insulation material, carpet padding or upholstery filling. In a few instances, fibers extracted from discarded items remain in a closed loop within the textile industry and are used for new “upcycled clothing” and then resold in retail stores. I:CO’s mission and best-in-class procedures are paving the way to a more sustainable future for fashion.
Westfield will receive payment from I:CO for the collected goods, with all proceeds from the program then donated to GLAM4GOOD, a non-profit organization that provides life-changing educational experiences, clothing giveaways and confidencebolstering fashion and beauty initiatives to enhance the lives of everyday heroes and people in need. “At GLAM4GOOD, we believe that improving the lives of others is the ultimate form of style,” said Mary Alice Stephenson, Founder and CEO of GLAM4GOOD. “We are honored to be the charitable partner for this groundbreaking initiative which will support our fashion empowerment programs for women and girls.”
