Frontline workers have carried the weight of the past year’s pandemic on their shoulders. Grocery workers, nurses, public works technicians, and emergency responders are just a few of the groups facing extra risks. And businesses, hospitals, and public service agencies have to go the extra mile to protect both their employees and the public.
Join us for a celebration of the efforts these companies have made for the safety of their workers and you.
The event will include a discussion of City of Hope’s work in researching a vaccination for COVID-19.

Max Gorin, Lifeline Ambulances
In 2002, Maxim Gorin co-founded LifeLine Ambulance in Los Angeles County with a six person sta and two ambulances. In the early years, Maxim, a newly licensed emergency medical technician, frequently responded to calls himself, handled late-night dispatching, and implemented marketing e orts to highlight the company’s client- centered mission.
Over the next decade, LifeLine entered into long-term growth while continually developing partnerships with key hospitals, insurance companies, managed care groups, nursing facilities, and other care providers in Los Angeles and Orange County. Today, LifeLine’s eet of
70 ambulances and over 300 employees o ers 24/7 high acuity patient care, basic life support, and critical care transport with a dedication to excellence in all aspects of healthcare..
Built from the need to support Lifeline’s growing operations, his clients, and the community, Maxim expanded Lifeline’s operations to include Lifeline Healthcare. He partnered with a direct manufacturer to develop and supply FDA approved sanitizing wipes, hand sanitizer, and other critical PPE items needed for Lifeline Ambulance employees and the community. His goal is focused on delivering high quality, FDA approved products that are immediately accessible within Los Angeles and Orange Counties.
As an immigrant from Ukraine, Maxim understands the importance of community service. He is a member of the American Heart Association and is serving on the Executive Leadership Team of the Orange County AHA. Maxim’s commitment to service extends to helping other business owners thrive. As an ambassador for the Montebello Chamber of Commerce, Maxim was able to provide valuable insight into leadership and growth within the community. He also serves on the San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership’s Board of Directors.
Dr. Susan Brown, City of Hope
Susan J, Brown, Ph.D., M.S.N., R.N., CENP, senior vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer provides vision, leadership and guidance to the practice of nursing and patient care at City of Hope. Dr. Brown, with more than 30 years of executive and senior leadership experience in oncology at academic medical centers, community hospitals and health care systems, also brings a decade of clinical experience as a staff nurse and clinical nurse specialist in the field.
At City of Hope, she leads the delivery of patient care for nursing, clinical nutrition, rehabilitation services, and respiratory and cardiac diagnostic laboratory services, and is responsible for patient care standards, professional practice standards, and the delivery of efficient and cost-effective care in inpatient and outpatient settings. As a passionate advocate for oncology nursing, with a strong interest in scientific research, she also supports City of Hope’s clinical research mission and leads transformational work redesign within her area.
Dr. Brown served as executive director for the Oncology Service Line at Mercy Health where she was responsible for cancer services in five hospitals in the Cincinnati region. In this role, she focused on building infrastructure and processes, and collaborating with private practice oncologists to establish the service line. Dr. Brown facilitated breast program certification in the hospitals, established a regional group for lung cancer and negotiated contracts for linear accelerators for the Mercy system.
Prior to joining Mercy Health, Dr. Brown was the chief nursing officer for The James Cancer Hospital at The Ohio State University, a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. In this role, she led the hospital to their first Magnet designation, a major achievement they had been pursuing for years. She was also instrumental in the go-live of their Epic launch institution-wide. Prior to James, Dr. Brown served as the associate vice president for cancer at Scottsdale Healthcare, as well as various leadership and clinical positions in other organizations.
Dr. Brown received her Ph.D. from the University of Arizona, College of Nursing, her Master of Science degree in Nursing at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania, and her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Nazareth College in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
After 25 years as a restauranteur and manager, Dr. Eric Zackrison returned to school to get his MBA and his MA/PhD in Organizational Communication. His research focuses on leadership, team dynamics, organizational relationships, and coordination. He has been teaching, training, and consulting in Santa Barbara and Ventura for the last five years, with a heavy focus on team building, leadership, and strategy. Throughout all of these pursuits, a common thread has been the power of managing relationships positively. His published research indicates that workplace relationships are at the core of coordinated teams and organizations. His work embraces the understanding that we have diverse ways of interacting and empowers people to manage those differences to be more successful.
Gary Clifford, Athens Services
From 2009 through 2013 Gary Clifford served as Chief Operating Officer / Executive Vice President for Athens Services. Gary is currently Executive Vice President focusing on Municipal and Strategic Relationships. Athens Services has been providing refuse removal and recycling services in Southern California for over 50 years.
Athens is family-owned and operated, offering a variety of State-of-the-Art services, including automated waste and recycling collection, yard waste recycling programs, special waste transportation, transfer and materials recovery, storage box rentals, and street and parking lot sweeping services in Los Angeles, Riverside, and Orange Counties.
