Collection Item Highlight
Indigenous People’s Day is observed October 9. To commemorate the celebration, we are highlighting a very important hunting instrument that would have been utilized by Arcadia’s earliest inhabitant, the Gabrieleno-Tongva. This item is an atlatl. An atlatl is a tool that uses leverage in order to successfully propel a spear at a high velocity. A spear, most likely, four to five feet tall, would be balanced at the end of this tool and launched at the animal. This atlatl replica is in the Museum’s collection.
