Future Leaders, Real Experiences, and Lasting Impact at Union Station Homeless Services
Inside the USHS H.O.U.S.E. Summer Internship Program

Graduates from Union Station’s third annual H.O.U.S.E. internship program
Hello Friend,
What happens when you give young people the time, tools, and trust to grapple with one of our community’s most complex challenges?
Union Station Homeless Services concluded its 3rd Annual H.O.U.S.E. (Homeless Outreach Utilizing Students and Education) Learning Intensive, welcoming a diverse group of eight high school juniors and seniors for an immersive week exploring one of our community’s most complex challenges.
Rather than relying on headlines or stereotypes, students engaged directly with the history, policy, lived experience, and evidence-based solutions surrounding homelessness.
From the history of modern day homelessness to Housing First and harm reduction, trauma-informed care, advocacy, ethical storytelling, and site visits, students explored the issue from every angle.
We enjoyed a powerful lunch and conversation with members of our LEAP (Lived Experience Advisory Panel) at Marv’s Place, a permanent supportive housing site for families.

Friday’s commencement confirmed just how much they had absorbed.
Their presentations reflected thoughtful, nuanced perspectives on the causes, conditions, and solutions to homelessness, along with an eye-opening and deep appreciation for the humanity behind the issue.
Students received Union Station Homeless Services Certificates of Completion, a $250 educational stipend, recognition from the Pasadena City Council, and official commendations from the Office of Los
Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who supports the program.
We are incredibly proud of this remarkable group of young leaders and excited to see how they carry these lessons into their schools, communities, and future careers.
