Paul Cheng Appointed Arcadia Mayor; District 3 Vacancy Process Begins
ARCADIA, CA – At its May 19, 2026, meeting, the Arcadia City Council appointed Council Member Paul P. Cheng to fill the vacancy of Mayor following the resignation of Eileen Wang from office, she represented District 3. Mayor Cheng will serve the remainder of the unexpired term until December 2026. Cheng, who represents District 4, most recently served as Mayor Pro Tem and has served on the Arcadia City Council since 2020.
During his address to the crowd, Mayor Cheng spoke about the need to unify during a difficult moment: “To every resident listening tonight, do not let fear consume you, do not let negativity divide you, and do not let anyone convince you that Arcadia is broken. This city is filled with good people, hardworking people, patriotic people, and compassionate people.”
The Arcadia City Council also appointed David Fu of District 1 to serve as Mayor Pro Tem, following the established rotation order for Council Members.
The Council then started the process of filling the District 3 vacancy until the next election cycle in November 2026. They voted unanimously to seek qualified candidates through an application and interview format, stressing the importance of having a transparent and fair process. Applications are available at ArcadiaCA.gov and must be submitted to CityClerk@ArcadiaCA.gov by Friday, May 29 at 11:59 PM. Interviews will be held at 5:00 PM on June 2, prior to the next Regular City Council Meeting.
Candidates must reside in Arcadia’s District 3, be a registered voter, a United States citizen, and at least 18 years of age. At last count, there were over 5,300 registered voters in District 3.
Following Eileen Wang’s resignation, the City of Arcadia has received questions from community members and the media, which have been compiled on the City’s website.
