Update: COVID-19 Cases, Positivity Rates & Hospitalizations
Today’s update included a disturbing new milestones for LA County. The following are highlights from today’s Department of Public Health (DPH) and Health Services (DHS) report:
- A rapid increase in the number of COVID-19 positive cases.
- LA County has surpassed 100,000 positive cases (100,772 cases, as of today).
- Our positivity rate has jumped to nearly 9% (from 6% in late May), even as testing capacity has remained high.
- Hospitalizations are on the rise in LA County. Transmission has increased & hospitalizations are increasing steeply.
- In just 2 weeks, we have seen a 27% increase in daily hospitalizations (from 1,319 on May 14th to 1,669 on June 27th).
- One in 140 people are infectious in LA County. Last week, that was 1 in 400.
The following illustrates the top reasons behind LA County’s further spread of COVID-19:
The fast increases in cases, positivity rates and hospitalizations are cause for great concern. While LA County residents are anxious to go back to normal, DPH and DHS caution LA County is nowhere near that.
LA County residents are urged (more than ever) to do their part to curb the further spread of COVID-19. Please:
- Wear your face covering.
- Stay at least 6 ft apart from anyone outside of your household.
- Wash your hands frequently.
This will make a difference in LA County’s ability prevent further spread and the unnecessary loss of life.

BEACHES TO CLOSE, BUSINESSES URGED TO COMPLY, LEARN HOW TO APPLY FOR NEW $3 MILLION RECOVERY FUND, AND INCIDENT REPORT
The County of Los Angeles is regularly updating resources on COVID-19 and offers today’s update in an effort to keep you and yours informed. Please share the following up-to-date information:
Beaches to Close Over Holiday Weekend
LA County’s Department of Public Health (DPH), last night, ordered the temporary closure of LA County beaches. Closures will begin July 3 at 12:01 a.m. through July 6 at 5:00 a.m., to prevent dangerous crowding that results in the spread of deadly COVID-19. In addition to the closure of all public beaches in LA County, the modified Health Order (link opens in new tab) also includes:
- The closure of piers, public beach parking lots, beach bike paths (that traverse sanded portions of the beach), and beach access points.
- All recreational activities on beaches are prohibited.
- Firework shows and events are also prohibited this July 4th holiday weekend.
Key metrics continue to show steep increases in community spread of COVID-19. Yesterday, DPH announced (link opens in new tab) the largest one-day case count (2,900 new cases) since the pandemic began. Projections by LA County’s Department of Health Services (DHS) also show a steep increase in hospitalizations in the coming weeks, which could cause a surge in our healthcare system.

Businesses Urged to Comply with COVID-19 Health Protocols
Yesterday’s update from the Departments of Public Health (DPH) and Health Services (DHS) reminds us LA County’s battle against COVID-19 is far from over. While our team of experts report individual action has contributed to LA County’s further spread of COVID-19, they share actions of businesses have also played a critical role.
The top reasons behind LA County’s further spread of COVID-19, as it pertains to businesses, is outlined in the below slide. It includes this past weekend’s inspections which showed:
1) 49% of bars and 33% of restaurants did not adhere to physical distancing protocols indoors; and
2) 54% of bars and 44% of restaurants had workers without masks & face shields.
We know many businesses are doing what they can to adhere to protocols, in order to reopen and conduct business safely. Doing so is not only an investment in the progress and future of the business, itself, but in the community the business relies on, and in the progress we’d all like to see during this challenging time.
LA County businesses are urged to do their part to curb the spread of COVID-19. To help keep employees and customers on the Road to Recovery, remember:
- You have every right to “reserve the right to refuse service” to those who do not adhere to safety protocols; and
- No Shirt, No Shoes, No Mask, No Service.
