Supervisor Kathryn Barger Urges Residents to Prepare for Elevated Wildfire Risk
Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger is urging residents to prepare for heightened wildfire risk as the National Weather Service forecasts a Red Flag Warning from today through Saturday night. Strong Santa Ana winds, low humidity, and warm temperatures could contribute to rapid fire spread, while Public Safety Power Shutoffs and weather-related power outages are also possible.
The Los Angeles County Emergency Operations Center and Joint Information Center are now activated and stand ready to coordinate preparedness efforts, response resources, and public information.
“Residents need to take these conditions seriously and prepare now,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “Strong winds can cause fires to spread quickly, leaving little time to react. Have your emergency supplies ready, keep your devices charged, and be prepared to evacuate if necessary.”
Supervisor Barger encourages residents to sign up for Alert LA County, monitor official updates, and prepare a go-bag with medications, important documents, and essential supplies for their families and pets. Residents should identify evacuation routes and be ready to leave immediately if ordered. With potential power shutoffs, households should also charge phones and backup batteries, stock drinking water and nonperishable food, and make backup arrangements for medical equipment that requires electricity.
“The Fifth District is home to some of the most fire-prone communities in Los Angeles County, from the foothills to the Antelope Valley and the Santa Clarita Valley,” added Supervisor Barger. “We know how quickly these conditions can turn dangerous, and we know that preparation saves lives. I urge every household to treat this warning as a call to act today.”
Residents can find wildfire preparedness guidance, evacuation information, and emergency checklists at Ready LA County. Residents should continue monitoring official County and local city communications for updates and follow all evacuation instructions from emergency officials.
