Arcadia Discovery! A new, simpler way to find what Library has for you.
July 18, 2020– The Arcadia Public Library has launched Arcadia Discovery!, a new online system that lets patrons search for printed materials, DVDs, and electronic resources like eBooks, eMagazines, and streaming audiobooks or videos with a single search. Arcadia Library patrons can use their existing library cards to track their checkouts and holds and can now opt into keeping track of their reading history so that Arcadia Discovery! can provide reading suggestions based on what they have read and liked previously.
A “digital library card” feature will allow patrons to checkout items at the Library using their phones! Based on the open source Aspen Discovery system, Arcadia Discovery! offers improved ease of use over the old catalog, provides reading recommendations, and displays all formats of titles within one result. Integration with the Library’s OverDrive eBook supplier allows patrons to check out eBooks without ever leaving Arcadia Discovery! Integration of NoveList and “More Like This” option helps users to discover new materials that they hadn’t previously heard of. “Type ahead” and search suggestions make it easy for patrons to find materials even if they don’t know how to spell a specific title or author name.
The Library is also introducing a streamlined online way to select books for the front-door pick-up service that uses the new Arcadia Discovery! platform. Starting on Monday, July 20, customers can Visit Discovery.ArcadiaLibrary.org to request up to five items, which will be pulled by Library staff and available for pick-up by appointment. Appointments are scheduled by Library staff from 10 am to 7 pm, Mondays through Thursdays, and 10 am to 5 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Library cards are available online, too.

Veterans Discover Healing through Photography
July 18, 2020– Arcadia Public Library is honored to host an online screening of the documentary, “Visions of Warriors,” written, produced and directed by Ming Lai and released by Humanist Films. This moving and insightful film will be available online from Monday, July 20 through Saturday, August 1. Call 626.821.4364 for the link and password for the screening and for information about an upcoming online panel discussion.
“Visions of Warriors” enters the minds of four veterans from the Vietnam War era to the Iraq War who are battling against mental illness—Mark Pinto, Homerina “Marina” Bond, Ari Sonnenberg, and Priscila “Peni” Bethel. They participate in the
groundbreaking Veteran Photo Recovery Project at the VA Menlo Park and use innovative photography therapy to treat their moral injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, military sexual trauma, and other mental illnesses.
The documentary also profiles the Veteran Photo Recovery Project team—founder and nurse practitioner Susan Quaglietti, art therapist Jeff Stadler, clinical social worker Ryan Gardner, and clinical psychologist Kristen McDonald. With a non-linear narrative structure to mirror the veterans’ shattered lives, the documentary alternates between the veterans and the mental health providers. It also introduces other dynamic veterans who participated in the program. Ultimately, “Visions of Warriors” is a universal story about the strength of the human spirit.
Arcadia Public Library’s showing of this moving and insightful film is part of the Community Conversations with Veterans Initiative. Community Conversations with Veterans is a partnership between California Center for the Book and Veterans Connect @ the Library. California Center for the Book is a program of the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.
