Commercial Organics Recycling – the next generation of recycling
California disposes approximately 30 million tons of organic waste (e.g., green materials and food) in landfills each year, of which more than 30 percent could be used for compost or mulch. Green waste recycling in residential areas has become a norm however not so in commercial and multi-family.
As a result, in October 2014, the State passed Assembly Bill 1826 which phases in the requirements for businesses and multi-family to recycle organics based on the amount and type of waste the business produces on a weekly basis. Starting in January 1, 2017, businesses that generate 4 cubic yards of organic waste per week have to arrange for organic waste recycling services.
