SCULPTURE
A sculpture, according to Encyclopedia Britannica, is an artistic form made of hard or plastic materials that has been worked into a three-dimensional art object. A variety of mediums such as clay, wax, stone, metal, fabric, glass, wood, plaster, rubber, or random “found” objects may be used. These can be carved, modeled, molded, cast, wrought, welded, sewn, assembled, shaped or combined.
Prehistoric sculpture began in the Stone Age. The earliest known examples in modern day Morocco, dating from c.230,000 BCE or earlier, are two primitive stone effigies known as The Venus of Berekhat Ram and The Venus of Tan-Tan.
After the 19th century, a new era of contemporary sculpture was created in which different materials and themes, other than nature, were used.
Michelangelo, the famous Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet during the Renaissance stated, “The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there; I just have to chisel away the superfluous material.”
Perfect home sculptures should reflect the mood of the room. For modern and contemporary interiors, abstract sculptures are well suited. Statuettes made of steel and bronze are often used as well.
Also, classical forms play a role in home decor. Their detail and drama make them the perfect piece to serve as a focal point, whether you choose a piece in stone, clay, metal or another material. Asian sculptures work well to create a rustic-chic style. Life-size statues and center piece fountains placed in the front yard are also great additions.
For whatever reason you choose, a sculpture can do more than just enhance a room. It is a piece of art and should speak to you in some way, whether for happiness, nostalgia or a more intellectual reason.
