Large or Small, Mirrors Reveal All and Can Provide Illusion of Extra Space
A mirror is a smooth surface that reflects images of objects, and it can be used as a decorative piece in your home or office.
In 1835, German chemist Justus von Liebig developed a process for applying a thin layer of metallic silver to one side of a pane of clear glass. This technique was soon adapted and improved upon, allowing for the mass production of mirrors.
Modern mirrors originated in the 19th century, but they have been around for much longer. According to a 2006 review by vision scientist Dr. Jay Enoch in the Journal Optometry and Vision Science, people in Anatolia, modern-day Turkey, manufactured the first mirrors out of ground and polished obsidian (volcanic glass) about 8,000 years ago.
Mirrors, besides the obvious use of checking our appearance, can be used for multiple purposes in the home or office.
Like a painting or sculpture, they are excellent decorative elements. If positioned correctly, they help to enlarge a well-lit space. Rectangular mirrors hung vertically can increase the visual height of the room and when hung horizontally, they can make a room look longer.
Mirrors can be cut into any shape, not only square or rectangular, or size, and they can be faceted to a wall with or without a frame.
The color and style of a frame surrounding a mirror can send a visual message and enhance and decorated area. Frames can be wooden with carved moldings, flat with a smooth surface or made of metal. Rustic, modern, contemporary, classic frames add flavor to any room including the bathroom. Make sure to place lighting around the sides of the mirror when located over a washbasin in order to avoid shade falling on your face.
Mirrored closet doors or cabinet doors are great solutions for cabinetry as well.
