ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Pasadena-based community group Makoto Taiko was established in 1999 and has approximately seventy members. Makoto Taiko’s membership diverse with individuals of all ages and experiences. Some members are Japanese Americans seeking an opportunity to connect with their cultural heritage, while for others, taiko drumming is way to express their creativity, enhance their well being, and develop meaningful connections with other who share the joy of drumming. Through precisely articulated rhythm and movements, Makoto Taiko’s drumming provides a spiritually powerful experience that, despite its Japanese origin, transcends cultures.
With a foundation forged with the renowned Taiko group Ondekoza, and 20 years as Shumei Taiko’s leader, Koji Nakamura has crafted Makoto Taiko into a vibrant, diverse community-based ensemble dedicated to sharing the power of taiko drumming.
Eien Hunter-Ishikawa travels the globe with genre-defying performances specializing in drum-set, taiko and shinobue. He is a member of the fearlessly innovative On Ensemble.
