The perspective most communities have when considering the services of the Pasadena Humane Society (PHS) and SPCA, is generally limited to just pet adoption. But what this morning’s guest speaker Julie Banks, President and CEO of PHS, clarified to those in attendance to the Arcadia Chamber’s Community Connection and Coffee forum was that the PHS has developed an organization built to offer a set of broad and diverse services. Those who came to this morning’s Community Connection also received updates from local legislative representatives and city officials.
Julie gave perspective on the PHS by expanding on some of its history. The organization was first founded to serve the community in 1903. In its past, before the 1930’s the PHS would offer protection and shelter for people as well as animals. Specifically they would offer assistance to children and victims of domestic abuse. As stated by Julie this history illustrates the long standing connected relation that exists between people and animals. Throughout the growth and development of the PHS, it has never strayed from its cause of helping people.
The mission of the PHS is to dedicate themselves to the promotion of humane treatment and compassionate care for all animals. They fulfill this mission through the various services they offer that focus on pet and wildlife care. Often the PHS is recognized for their Animal Control services, which help to provide assistance as a full service shelter and accepts All animals, regardless of health condition, age, or breed. PHS has animal control contacts within the cities of Altadena, Arcadia, Bradbury, Glendale, La Canada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Monrovia, Pasadena, San Marino, Sierra Madre and South Pasadena. Julie denoted that in the consideration of Animal Control the PHS is dedicated to three areas within that service; Enforcement of animal ordinances, providing animal rescues, and lastly educating local communities. Most cities within the areas of service of PHS have their own animal ordinances which must be upheld.
In consideration of education, the PHS has realized the vital role of information distribution and its impact when it comes to animal care and services. The PHS provides people with information on how to be a responsible pet owner, they’re trying to teach people how to best care for their animal in all ways in order to fulfill the goal of keeping pet families whole. Along this same notion of keeping families whole, PHS makes it their goal to inform families who are considering surrendering to understand that their are various solutions which are offered by PHS.
