On Saturday, November 25th, Santa Anita played first time host to Rust Fest, an 11 hour festival of classic rock, with bands paying tribute to greats such as Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Metallic, Guns N Roses and more. Held on two stages, concert goers rotated from one to the other, where the music went non-stop for 11 straight hours. Known as ‘Black Saturday,’ this annual battle of the hard rock bands is in its 12 year, originally stemming from the 1983 Heavy Metal Day. Around 2000 hard rock fans crowded the infield at Santa Anita Park, now in its fall off-season from thoroughbred horse racing.
Bands included Masters of Puppets, Fan Halen, Motley Crued, Hurricane, Paradise Kitty, Iron Maidens and Black Sabbitch (all-female tribute bands), Just Like Priest, Bonfire and Rhoads to Ozz, and Led Zeppagain.
