This has been a special year for the Assistance League of Arcadia as our chapter has been celebrating 60 years of service to our community. On May 14, 2014 the auxiliary, Las Alas, installed its new governing board for 2014- 2015. The Installation dinner was held at the spacious Arcadia Golf Course. Members gathered at 6:00 p.m. for a chance to socialize and sign up for committee assignments for the upcoming year. In addition, Bargain Box Assistant Chairman, Anne Pavlik along with her co-chair Suzanne Tauer encouraged members to sign up to volunteer their time at the Bargain Box Thrift Shop at 64 E. Live Oak in Arcadia.
This year’s theme chosen by our returning chairman, Suzette Williams is, “A diamond is just a lump of coal that did exceptionally well under pressure.” It was fitting that Suzette flitted about in her dazzling, diamond-covered sandals, since last year her theme was, “If the shoe fits.” Donna Perez and her committee made the room sparkle. Centerpieces glowed with precious gems atop lumpy bits of coal. A lovely dinner was served at 6:30 p.m.
Following our meal, member Laurie Morton led us in the salute to our flag and read words of inspiration. Laurie expressed her gratitude for being a member of such a caring organization. Doris McElwee a founding member in attendance reminded us that our auxiliary was founded in 1980. The purpose of Las Alas is to support chapter philanthropic programs and activities. The auxiliary gives woman that work during the day an opportunity to serve their community since our meetings are held at night. Former chairmen in attendance were Laurie Wagoner, Debbie Anderson, Eleanor Powell, Suzanne Tauer, Pat Baderian, Nancy Keathly, and Noreen McLennan. Guests included outgoing ALA president Keppie Sullivan and incoming president Kay Kinsler and board member Debbie Weber.
Chairman Suzette Williams gave her year end report and thanked outgoing board members for their service and for “stepping into action” when needed. Next on the agenda to install the new governing board were members Glenn Duppenthaler and Pauline Farmer. Incorporating Suzette’s new theme each new board member was compared to a precious gem. In addition to the opportunity to serve on our governing body those installed were presented with a gift of appreciation. Suzette was excited and surprised to receive her sparkly Minnie Mouse ears! After signing up for another year as Chairman, Suzette was asked, “What are you going to do next?” She replied, “I’m going to Disneyland!”
Assistance League’s charitable programs touch the lives of children, families and seniors. Funding for these programs is provided by proceeds from our thrift store sales, donations and grants. These programs rely on the involvement of more than 340 hands on, unpaid volunteer members. Visit website for additional program information and membership opportunities, at ALArcadia.org.
