How long have you been in business:
It’s going to be 2 years in April, we opened our doors to the public in 2018.
What were you doing before you owned your business:
My husband had an opportunity to get a job in Texas; we wanted to get the experience of living out of California where we were born and raised. So, we went to Dallas and worked in the 9-5 Corporate World for about 4 years. We started missing California and our families so we came back and explored new opportunities.
How did you end up in a franchise?
We knew we wanted to open a business and after researching 3 different franchises, we decided on British Swim School. We were one of the first to open in (California).
What is the most interesting thing you have learned about yourself as a business owner?
I’ve learn how to communicate better and use different styles of communications. You have to understand the best way to communicate to the people that matter in your business; some like written, some like verbal; some like text; some likes apps. I’ve really learned to listen to people and understand feedback.
How many hats do you wear and what are they?
One of my main hats is Human Resources; I hire all the instructors. I also wear the Customer Service hat. Mario does more of the operations and marketing.
How do you like working with your husband?
It’s been great because we have learned a lot about each other. There are ups and downs but in the end it makes us have a stronger bond. One thing that we talked about when we opened the business is that we would have different roles and that we would respect each. That’s worked out well.
What are some of your hobbies?
I love to cook! One day I want to start a Youtube channel for cooking. One of my favorite chefs is Pati Jinich , she has a show on PBS called Pati’s Mexican Table. I recently got to meet her in person and went to one her lectures/ interview at the Skirball Cultural Center. It was so awesome and inspiring. I like to cook traditional Mexican food as well as healthy fare. I cook for my pescatarian husband and I love to make tacos, all kinds of tacos especially soy chorizo tacos!
What’s on the bucket list that you haven’t done yet?
I want to go to Japan. I love the culture and the architecture. I really love to travel and incorporate that into my lifestyle. For example, Barcelona gave me the love of sweet and strong coffee!
What do you want people to know about you?
We believe in collaboration. We are very active in the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce where we have met and collaborated with so many wonderful, local businesses. We love our community.
