UPDATE ON LA COUNTY’S HOSPITAL-DEMAND MODEL, COVID-19 FACTS, THE CENSUS, AND INCIDENT REPORT
The County of Los Angeles is regularly updating resources on COVID-19 and offers today’s update in an effort to keep you and yours informed. Please share the following up-to-date information:
DHS Update: Hospital-Demand Model, COVID-19 Facts
COVID-19 Hospital-Demand Model Update
Today’s update is brought to you by Dr. Christina Ghaly, the Director of LA County’s Department of Health Services (DHS). She’s shares
- The number of new cases of COVID-19 requiring care in our hospitals each day remains constant.
-
- In terms of the hospital system, LA County’s COVID-19 DHS Hospital Demand Model (link opens in new tab) currently projects:
- Hospital Beds & Ventilator numbers appear adequate to meet the projected need for the care of additional COVID-19 patients over the next 4 weeks.
- The number of ICU Beds is more limited, in part, due to the need to care for a greater number of non-COVID patients (as people receive critical non-COVID services). This supply may become inadequate if LA County’s rate of transmission increases.
- This week’s Rate of Transmission (R) is slightly under 1 – specifically, our model is now calculating it as 0.94, with a range of uncertainty from 0.83 to 1.03.
- The R being reported, as of today, specifically includes an adjustment down for those who are presumed to already be immune due to prior infection.
- LA County has made the change so that our model output is consistent (and directly comparable), with how other communities and models report R.
To learn more about the data included in Dr. Ghaly’s update, today, visit dhs.lacounty.gov (link opens in new tab). Once there, you’ll find: 1) Regularly updated COVID-19 Hospital Demand Model Projections (link opens in new tab); 2) A COVID-19 Dashboard (link opens in new tab), which contains information on LA County’s available hospital beds, supplies, hospitalized patients and COVID-19 demographics; and 3) The COVID-19 Patient Webpage (link opens in new tab), where you can access the COVID-19 Nurse Advice Line, schedule appointments or get help with making appointments, ordering medication, locating the nearest Urgent Care location, and more.
COVID-19 Facts
Also included in Dr. Ghaly’s update to County residents, is a series of misconceptions about COVID-19, that risk hindering LA County’s ability to prevent future spread.
Today, we introduce you to a week-long segment on COVID-19 Facts, in order to keep you (and those around you) safe, while curbing the spread of COVID-19 across LA County:
COVID-19 Fact #1: The virus is spreading.
How do we know?
- By tracking the number of new patients requiring hospitalization with COVID-19 everyday.
- Hospitalizations allow us to understand transmission, AND not be misled by increased cases because of more access to testing.
The Census
Unless every resident gets counted, LA County stands to lose millions of dollars that could go to hospitals, schools, and neighborhoods. During the 2020 census, let’s ensure equity and aim for everyone to get counted. Get counted (link opens in new tab).

COVID-19 FACT #2, NEW RESOURCES FOR LATINO COMMUNITIES, CA GOVERNORS’ MESSAGE TO YOU, AND INCIDENT REPORT
COVID-19 Facts
Don’t let misconceptions about COVID-19 hinder LA County’s ability to prevent future spread. Know the facts, so you and your community can stay safe:
COVID-19 Fact #2: The most important COVID-19 metric is the number of new patients requiring hospitalization.
Why? New hospitalizations mean increased spread. Increased spread means new measures are needed to reduce it.
ICYMI: New Mental Health Resources for Latino Communities
Yesterday, LA County announced new resources for Latino communities, in response to a an increased need for COVID-19 related mental health services. In LA County, Latino communities have: 1) the highest number of confirmed cases of COVID-19, 2) the highest death rate, and 3) are more likely to say that they or someone in their household has experienced a pay cut or job loss due to COVID-19.
In case you missed it, the following are highlights from yesterday’s announcement (link opens in new tab) (read the announcement in Spanish here (link opens in new tab)):
- LA County’s Department of Mental Health (DMH), in partnership with the UCLA Hispanic Neuropsychiatric Center of Excellence, is building up a team of 150 Spanish-speaking “promotores” (trusted messengers who will connect people with services) who will work side-by-side with DMH clinicians to ensure vulnerable Latino communities are tested for COVID-19 and connected with improved and expanded mental health resources.
- UCLA and DMH have established bilingual support groups for Latino parents of children with disabilities and mental disorders (such as autism and ADHD) as many of these families are struggling due to the pandemic. There are bilingual support groups for elderly persons and caregivers who are also more likely to be struggling at home during this time.
- In addition to work in the community, UCLA has created resiliency training for DMH psychologists to support them in dealing with their own burnout and grief.
If you missed yesterday’s live broadcast on LA County’s latest effort, view it here (link opens in new tab). For mental health support or services, please call 800-854-7771 or text “LA” to 741741. Our caring team of DMH experts is ready to assist you.

COVID-19 FACT #3, NEXT DAY TESTING STILL AVAILABLE, PROJECT ROOMKEY UPDATE, AND INCIDENT REPORT
COVID-19 Facts
Don’t let misconceptions about COVID-19 hinder LA County’s ability to prevent future spread. Know the facts, so you and your community can stay safe:
COVID-19 Fact #3: Reopening does NOT mean the spread of COVID-19 is “under control.”
Why? Safer at Home was a necessary measure, but not a sustainable path forward. Safely reopening is important to the future of our society. We must follow health practices including: wearing face coverings, washing hands frequently, keeping 6 feet apart, and staying home when sick.

If you do not have insurance and need help connecting with a healthcare provider, dial 2-1-1 for assistance.
Project Roomkey Update
LA County prevailed, today, in litigation that allows Project Roomkey to continue serving the most vulnerable residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The cities of Bell Gardens and Lynwood have been dismissed from a lawsuit brought by LA County. These cities had previously enacted legislation to bar local hotels from participating in Project Roomkey and related temporary housing programs run by LA County. The County sought to block their efforts.
Read today’s press release (link opens in new tab) for more details, including background information, the County’s filing, and an amicus brief in support of Project Roomkey.
