The September 17 Networking Breakfast got off to a galloping start with a nice crowd of more than 50 filling Dave and Buster’s show room in Westfield Santa Anita mall to hear from guest speaker Mike Wilman from Santa Anita Park at the monthly program sponsored by Rose Hills Memorial Park & Mortuary. The timing was perfect with the track’s one-month Autumn Meet getting underway Sept. 26. Mike gave everyone in attendance two free club house tickets and a great primer on all things related to horse racing, including the history of the track here in Arcadia during a preliminary tribute to Santa Anita as an Arcadia Business Icon by Arcadia Chamber of Commerce CEO Scott Hettrick together with Carol Libby and Karen Hou of the Arcadia Historical Society.

Scott and Carol noted that Santa Anita Park opened on Christmas Day in 1934, just five months after the 13 year-old Arcadia Chamber of Commerce was officially incorporated in order to give a more official promotion to the new facility.
Mike was pleased to note that Triple Crown winner American Pharaoh was recently back in residence at Santa Anita for only a few more weeks before he heads to Kentucky for his final race and then retirement and the stud farm. Attendees were told they can see him work out while having breakfast at Clockers’ Corner. The much-heralded horse enjoyed a hero’s welcome when he returned to trainer Bob Baffert’s barn at Santa Anita earlier this summer. It was quite a sight to see a police escort for this fabled horse as it wound it’s way through Arcadia.
